| What is a bleed and why do I need margins? Back to Suggestions ... What causes the problems described below? A bleed is an area in the artwork that extends beyond the business card final size. See diagram. Its purpose is to avoid unwanted white space when you want a colour to touch the borders. See figure below. There are two major reasons why we ask for margins. See diagram. One is technical and the other aesthetics. The maximum allowable margin area is 3.375" x 1.875" (inches). Anything more could risk being chopped off. For aesthetics purposes we recommend working within 3.25" x 1.75"(inches). See figure below.
